Classics Elite Athletes Named Express News 2010 Soccer Players of the Year

On April 18, 2010 the San Antonio Express News named Classics Elite players David Bergien and Georgia Ashley Mullins as the Express News Soccer Players of the Year. The paper honored them as the top high school soccer players in the greater San Antonio area. David and Georgia continue a proud tradition for our club, as this is the fourth consecutive year the club has swept the player of the year honors. Congratulations to David and Georgia! They worked hard to earn this recognition, and we are proud of their accomplishments.

David is an outstanding center back playing for our U-18 US Development Academy team, playing at the highest level of youth soccer the Country provides. David has played with CESA since moving to the United States from Switzerland. David has ambitions to become a professional soccer player and will likely return to Switzerland and join BSC Young Boys of Berne and follow his dream after graduating from high school. David has been coached by Classics Elite Academy staff Brian Monaghan, Manuel Buentello, Paul McGinlay, and Mike Alderson. CESA players joining David on the Express News Boys Super Team were Johnny Lawson, J.W. Slauson, and Joe Van Hulle. Numerous other CESA boys were named to State, Area, and District teams. One of the highest honors for our boys was their continued participation in the US Soccer Federation's Development Academy play. This is the level of play that will feed into our US National teams, and the players are regularly observed by the US National team coaches. Participation is currently limited to the top 77 clubs in the nation. Only a few clubs in Texas have been admitted, and we are the only Club in San Antonio to receive this honor. Our boys participating in the Development Academy were recently recognized at the AT&T Center during half-time of a Spurs game.

Georgia has played for our '92 Girls team for five years, competing at the Premier League level. She is the captain of the team and is college bound for Baylor University, which recruited her before she entered her junior year. She has been voted player of the year by her CESA teammates the past four years. She plays in defense and midfield equally well. Georgia has been coached by CESA Director of Coaching, Brian Monaghan, and he credits her success to her talent, attitude, dedication, and commitment to the game of soccer. CESA players joining Georgia on the Express News Girls Super Team were Leah Balcar, Shannon Canty, Bekah Counce, Sharis Lachappelle, Alyssa Mora, Maggie Schaffer, Sara Van Horn, and Amanda Watkins. Numerous other CESA players were named to State, Area, and District teams. We continue to have more girls playing at the Division One and Premier level than all other clubs in San Antonio combined.

We are incredibly proud of all our athletes honored by the Express News. It is a proud day for them and their families. These players have combined talent with years of hard work and dedication. They embrace the challenge of working with the best trainers and competing at the highest level of soccer year round. And the family support behind these kids is incredible. The families have encouraged and supported these kids' passion for soccer for years, driving them to countless practices and games.
