Academy Boys Recognized at Spurs Game
  April 19, 2010

Our USSF Developmental Academy Junior and Senior boys teams were both recognized at half time of the Spurs-Houston game on March 31, 2010. Our boys teams took the court at half time as our CESA logo was displayed on the AT&T Center lighthouse, and the Spurs announcer addressed the crowd:

"Please join me in congratulating the Classics Elite Junior Boys team and the Classics Elite Senior Boys team. Both teams play at the highest level of youth soccer in the nation, by participating in the US Soccer Federation Youth Academy play. This is the level of play that feeds into the US National team, and the play at this level is regularly reviewed by the national team coaches. Only 77 teams in 50 states have qualified to play at this level, and we are extremely proud of these boys who represent San Antonio and Texas so well. They are trained by Brian Monaghan, Paul McGinlay, Manuel Buentello, and Mike Alderson. We wish both teams and their trainers the best with their upcoming matches against teams from Michigan, and we wish each player good luck as they pursue their dreams of playing for the US National team."

  CESA Athletes Named Express News
2009 Soccer Players of the Year

On April 16, 2009 the San Antonio Express News named Classics Elite players Blake Smith and Alex Burton as the Express News Soccer Players of the Year. The paper honored them as the top High School soccer players in the Greater San Antonio area. Congratulations to Blake and Alex! They worked hard to earn this recognition, and we are proud of their accomplishments.

Blake plays for our U-18 US Academy team, and played with the Club throughout his High School career. He was originally on our '91 boys team coached by Eddie Hernandez, and has since progressed to the US Academy team were he is under the guidance of Academy staff Brian Monaghan, Manuel Buentello, Kevin Langan, and Paul McGinlay. Blake will continue his education at the University of New Mexico where he will play Division 1 soccer. Joining Blake on the Express News Boys Super Team are Placide Buduri and Matt Cardone. Numerous other CESA boys were named to State, Area, and District teams. One of the highest honors for our boys was their participation in the US Soccer Federation's Development Academy this season. Participation is currently limited to the top 79 clubs in the nation. Only a few clubs in Texas have been admitted, and we are the only Club in San Antonio to receive this honor. When the Federation recently expanded from 74 clubs, they received applications from 250 clubs for the 5 additional spots. Several of the top male players in San Antonio chose not to play HS soccer this spring to focus on CE US Academy team training.

Alex Burton plays for our '91 girls team, and played with the Club throughout her youth soccer career. Alex has been coached by Lance Key and Brian Monaghan. Alex will continue her education at Rice University where she will play Division 1 soccer. Joining Alex on the Express News Girls Super Team are Brooke Matula, Sammie Mechinus, Georgia Mullins, Brianna Tammaro, Leah Balcour, Kalie Cirinna and Christy Lachappelle. Numerous other CESA players were named to State, Area, and District teams. We continue to have more girls playing at the Division One and Premier level than all other clubs in San Antonio combined. As further testament to the success of our girls, they dominate the rosters of the top teams. Reagan High School is a great example. In late March, the Reagan girls were ranked #1 in the nation, and all 11 starters were CESA players.

We are incredibly proud of all our athletes honored by the Express News. It is a proud day for them and their families. These players have combined talent with years of hard work and dedication. They embrace the challenge of working with the best trainers and competing at the highest level of soccer year round. And the family support behind these kids is incredible. The families have encouraged and supported these kids' passion for soccer for years, driving them to countless practices and games.
