San Antonio Blossoms Women’s Soccer Team

To begin play in May 2018

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - The newly formed San Antonio Blossoms Women’s Soccer Team is pleased to announce that they will be joining the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) for the upcoming season. The WPSL is the largest women’s soccer league in the world with over 100 teams competing in 17 conferences in cities all over the country.  The San Antonio Blossoms will be playing in the South Texas Conference, which is the Central Region of the WPSL.

The Blossoms name is a tribute to the tradition of the Battle of Flowers Parade, the largest parade held during Fiesta San Antonio, which is planned and managed entirely by women volunteers. The Battle of Flowers Parade, the second largest day parade in the U.S., honors the fallen heroes of the Alamo, commemorates the victory of San Jacinto and celebrates the diversity and heritage of Texas. When asked about the Blossoms name, Director of Operations, Guadalupe Alvarez-Metzger stated, “It was important for us to have a name that reflects and celebrates the history of our great city and the strong women that are an integral part of that history.”

The San Antonio Blossoms will have a short time to build a team, as they begin play in May 2018.  Associate Head Coach, Owen Collie, commented on this challenge, “Our staff has strong ties in the women’s game at the club, collegiate, and professional levels, so we will use those connections to field a talented team with strong ties to the San Antonio soccer community. We have commitments from current and former collegiate players, current WPSL players, and standout youth players.  We are feeling good about the roster we are building.”   General Manager and Associate Head Coach, Aaron Metzger, added, “We are excited about joining the WPSL and keeping high level women’s soccer here in San Antonio.  We are building an exciting roster that has a good mixture of youth and experience with a lot of homegrown, San Antonio talent.  We will bring in players who will complement our open and attacking style of play, while serving as positive female role models in our community.”
